Eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica, Northern hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria, soft-shell clams, Mya arenaria, and bay scallops, Argopeclen irradians are routinely cultured in shellfish hatcheries throughout the northeastern United States for private sale, public stock enhancement and management programs. The culture process involves spawning adults, rearing the resultant larvae in large tanks, and raising the juveniles to a field plantable size.
