Diseases have been a recognized problem in the culture of the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, since 1915 when the first reported epidemic or “epizootic” mortality of oysters occurred in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The outbreak, now referred to as “Malpeque Bay disease” remains a mystery to scientists who have been unable to identify a cause for the epizootic.
